D. Carl Young is a dedicated attorney who is passionate about helping people through life’s challenging situations. In all of his cases, Carl seeks to address his clients’ current needs while always keeping an eye towards his clients’ long-term goals. Carl has a quantitative academic background and excels working with complex financial issues. He also has two children of his own and enjoys helping families with parenting challenges.
Prior to joining Knies, Helland & McPherson Law, Carl worked as an intelligence officer in the United States Army. He commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 2011 and he served with special operations forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Carl left the military after more than 5 years of overseas service to spend more time with his family, but he continues to serve in the Army Reserves.
Carl remains passionate about veterans’ issues and giving back to his local community. In his free time, he serves as the Service Officer for VFW Post 101. During law school, Carl worked in legal aid where he spent the bulk of his final year of school assisting low-income families. While working in legal aid, Carl became familiar with a number of frequently litigated family law issues including domestic violence, mental health issues, and substance abuse.
Carl is a graduate of the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law. He completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Puget Sound where he was a varsity rower. He is also an avid mountaineer and skier. His summits include Mt. Rainier, Mt. Shasta, Mt. St. Helens, and over twenty fourteeners here in Colorado. In his free time, Carl enjoys relaxing in the outdoors with his wife, their children, and their two Newfoundland dogs.
